I have always thought that the 1970’s was the last great decade when it came to intros, okay so there’s clearly been a lot of good intros since, but for me the 70’s had them in abundance. I think of tracks from the likes of Earth Wind & Fire, The Stylistics, Wings and even those exotic sounding Martini adverts! And for me there’s never been anything to touch them.
It has to be said though that every now and again a track comes along with an intro that blows your mind, and one such track is the brand new release (or should I say the brand new masterclass) from Marquis Drive. The new single is called 21st Century Gospel, and the intro is simply sublime.
In fact, it’s that good it could easily be used in a Bond Movie. I can see it now, Sean Connery stood in a casino ordering his drink, “Ssshhaken not Ssshtirred” whilst simultaneously rolling dice on the craps table and chatting up some upper class tart who just happens to be a Russian spy!
21st Century Gospel is much more than just an intro though, it’s a melodic masterpiece from a band that grows in stature with every new release. The track is available in it’s original long version and also a snappier radio edit (the latter losing none of it’s emotive appeal). The midlands based magnificent 7 are known for their uplifting pop-indie sound, but they’ve shown here that they can also produce a truly moving orchestral piece. The single is out now on all good digital platforms, and as always you can have a listen here.
